Utah boat registration and insurance requirements

We want to make sure that you are well equipped with the proper knowledge and coverages so that way you can have fun on the water with peace of mind. Please see the below requirements and coverages. If you have any questions at all please as us by clicking here.

Watercraft Registration basics

According the stateparks.utah.gov certificate of registration is required on all sailboats and motorboats in the proper area on the watercraft. The only exception to this is canoes, kayaks and other vessels not propelled by motor or sail. another exception would be out of state residents you use the Utah waters 60 days or less as long as they have registration in their home state. Registration must on board the vessel at all times as law enforcrement has the authority to ask for it whenever the watercraft is being used.

Watercraft Insurance Basics

According to the stateparks.utah.gov personal watercraft whether motorboats or sail boats must carry watercraft liability insurance at all times when operating in any Utah waters. The state minimum requirements for boat insurance are $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury/death & $15,000 in property damage coverage or $65,000 combined minimum per accident.

I personally recommend way more coverage than that as boat insurance is one of the cheaper insurances out there and will not cost you much to bump up coverages. The only exception to this is motorboats less than 50hp or airboats. Proof of insurance must be carried on the watercraft whenever it is operating on Utah waters. Sufficient proof of coverage is an insurance card, declarations page, binder, renewal page.
