History of Utah

Utah was made a state January 4th 1896 with Salt Lake City as the capital and it is the 45th. Utah is known for the best snow on earth that attracts avid skiers, snowboarders & other snow enthusiasts from all over the world. Utah is also known for Four Corners.

Another attraction about Utah is its amazing scenery. The Rocky Mountains cut right through the state to provide numerous places to hike, camp and fish. The nickname for Utah is called the Beehive state and its state bird is the Seagull and the state tree is the Blue Spruce.

The total square mileage of Utah is approximately 85,000 square miles. As of 2021 the population of the state of Utah is almost 3.4 million people. Utah is also famous for its national parks such as Zion, Arches and Bryce Canyon.

Also on the east side of the state has one of the best dinosaur museums in the entire country. Or if you like to ride dune buggies you can head to Coral Pink Sand Dunes National Park and shred some sand. This is just a handful among many of the things we absolutely love about our great state of Utah.

General information regarding Utah car insurance requirements

No fault insurance or what we call PIP (Personal Injury Protection) must be maintained in order to legally operate of vehicle on Utah roads and to be registered with the state if:

Owner/operator is a resident

The owner/operator is non resident but has been in Utah for at least 90 days.

All motor vehicles must maintain liability coverage during the registration period.

Insurance verification requirements

Utah has databases full of insurance policies that have been issued by insurance carriers to ensure that no drivers are on the road without insurance.

The DMV partners with a company called Insure-Rite, Inc, which also collects information from Utah insurers and compares them to the registration database.

If the state finds issues with the residents insurance coverages or policies they will notify you via letter in the mail and may require you to provide proof of insurance via declarations page, letter from carrier, insurance card etc.

Proof of insurance must be carried in the vehicle at all times. Whether physical copy or electronic format.

Penalties for vehicle insurance violations

If the state of Utah notifies you via letter that you need to make a change to your insurance or provide proof and you fail to do so, your information will be given to state & local law enforcement and the DMV.

If the person is convicted in court or DPS finds that you operated a vehicle without insurance the registration on the vehicle will most likely be suspended.

Also that person's license may also be suspended or non-renewed. It is a class B misdemeanor for failing to provide proof of insurance and is finable up to $1000.

After reinstatement the DPS will require the person to maintain proof of insurance for a 3 year period. If at that time the person terminates the policy they may be required to surrender their license.

So it is safe to say that the easiest, cheapest and most logical way is just to insure your vehicle, maintain coverage and carry proof of insurance.

State minimum liability requirements

The minimum liability for the state of Utah is 25/65/15. The first number, 25, means $25,000 in bodily injury liability.

This means that in the event of you causing an accident your insurance carrier is obligated to pay up to the amount of 25,000 if someone gets injured as a direct result of the accident.

This payment includes medical costs, lost wages and funeral expenses among other things. The second part of this liability is 65 or $65,000 in bodily injury per accident.

This means that in the event of multiple people getting injured as a result of an accident you caused, the insurance company will pay up to this amount between multiple people as much as it is necessary.

The last number, 15, indicates $15,000 property damage liability. This means if you hit anything with your vehicle such as other vehicles, street lights, signs, buildings or other permanent fixtures.

Reinstating a vehicle due to insurance violations

To reinstate your vehicle registration you most do the following:

  1. Provide current registration or title showing current owner

  2. Proof of identification

  3. Provide an EOI (Evidence of Insurance). This can be either SR22 form, declarations page, insurance binder, insurance card.

  4. Pay a $100 reinstatement fee.
